LNG Canada Phase 2 FID in September,
B.C.-Federal MOU expected July 2: Eby
By Cathryn Atkinson June 26, 2026
VANCOUVER - British Columbia Premier David Eby said the final investment decision (FID) on LNG Canada Phase 2 is expected to take place in September.
Eby spoke at a press conference ahead of leading a B.C. trade delegation to China on June 27, and connected the FID with his trip.
“There are some very specific major decisions that are coming up in the energy sector where China has a footprint here in British Columbia, specifically the LNG Canada Phase 2 project, which is reaching final investment decision in September,” Eby told reporters in Vancouver.
“PetroChina is one of the major investors in that project… I'll be meeting with them and very much looking forward to engaging on this.”
This will be Eby’s first-ever trip to China.
B.C.-federal MOU announcement expected
Eby also said that at the behest of Prime Minister Mark Carney, he would be returning from China a day early in order to potentially announce a finalized major projects memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the federal government on July 2.
“The federal government has been engaging in negotiations with us in British Columbia on an MOU on major projects... Those negotiations have been going well and progressing quite quickly,” Eby said.
“I will be unfortunately cutting my visit a bit short in China to be back for July 2, and hopeful we'll be able to close off negotiations with the federal government and share some good news at that point.”
Eby added that Carney has invited him to travel to China in November as part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Gathering.
Asked if there was an update on Alberta’s MOU pipeline agreement with Ottawa ahead of the July 1 deadline, Eby said the B.C. government was focused on its own projects, including the North Coast Transmission Line, rather than an Alberta agreement.
